She knew that some first-years would actually be wearing pull-ups after a year of prep and practice. Ellie had put a significant deal of thought into the kind of protection she would wear on her first day of school. “Very well, you may follow me.” The woman introduced herself as Professor Lynnwood, the Head of House for all first-years and professor for Introductory Potty Training.Įllie suddenly felt self-conscious of her damp padding as she hurried to keep up with Professor Lynnwood’s long strides. “Yes, that’s me,” she managed to whisper to the tall woman.

The sound of Ellie’s full name made her stomach flip, and she felt a small trickle of pee escape and absorb into her previously dry diaper. After a while, Ellie found herself at the front of the line facing a rather stern-looking woman with dark hair tied up in a tight bun. Ellie was immediately ushered in the direction of 20-30 students gathered in a line labeled “First Years.” She struck up conversation with two girls ahead of her as the line moved steadily onward. The building was cavernous, with stone walls and students bustling around at great speed. Despite her efforts to prepare, however, she walked into the main school building with her heart beating a little too fast for comfort.

All first years were supposed to begin their day by meeting their personal mentor and undergoing an “initial evaluation.” Ellie wasn’t sure what the evaluation would involve, so she had prepped by reviewing all of her old notebooks from the end of high school: art history, American lit, physics, and music theory. She checked her schedule one last time, stepped out of her car, and started up to the main entrance hall.

Ellie’s high school had run a potty training prep course, but after a few weeks (and a mortifying parent-teacher conference), the school had determined that she should wait until after the summer, when they anticipated she would be “developmentally ready.”ĭespite this setback, which had felt insurmountable at the time, Ellie was entering her first day of college with bright eyes and a healthy amount of nervous anticipation. But potty training officially began in earnest in post-secondary education.

Of course, in most places around the country, potty training prep courses usually started during senior year of high school. It meant a whole new group of friends, much more stimulating classes, and the beginning of a long-awaited milestone: potty training. She had been anticipating this day all summer, packing and repacking her trunk of suitcases at least once a week. It was the first day of college, and Ellie was feeling nervous.
